This is Mr. Big. When my son David (we call him Muggy) was 5 days old he started having seizures and was airlifted to Cardinal Glennon Hospital. He almost died, and was in a drug induced coma for several weeks (to try and stop the constant seizures) until they finally figured out he had a VERY rare disorder called Pyridoxine Dependency (also known as pyridoxine responsive epilepsy). Pyridoxine is vitamin B6, and Muggy has to take 100mg per day or he will have seizures. Although he has now been seizure-free for over 4 years (thank God!), he is developmentally delayed. |
Because MRI scans of his brain showed a significant space between his frontal lobe and his skull, there were concerns that he might have hydrocephalus, which is where Mr. Big comes in. To test for hydrocephalus Muggy had to have TWO spinal taps, a procedure that is extremely painful. After his second spinal tap (which showed that he did NOT have hydrocephalus thank God) Muggy was allowed to pick out a stuffed animal for being so cool and tough during the procedure, and he picked this chameleon.
Muggy is doing great now, he is in 1st grade and we are so proud of the progress he makes everyday! I decided to make Mr. Big the mascot of Big Easy to remind me to work hard every day, and to remember to thank God every day for blessing me with such a super-cool son. Way to go Muggy for being such a great, funny and awesome kid - you are my biggest inspiration and your mom and I love you very much!
